Waste Streams

Home Grown Waiheke operate a weekly collection service to over 130 households in the Surfdale area and sell the resulting compost. They also have a number of contracts to take the waste from various events on the island. They take the waste from the weekly farmers market as well as festivals and concerts. We teamed up with Cable Bay and Waiheke Home Grown to run a zero-waste event (they had one large rubbish bag go to landfill) for the Fly My Pretties concert earlier this year. Innocent PLA clear cups were used to serve drinks and other compostable products we used for food. After the event WHG collected the organic waste (cups, other compostable products and food scraps) They are working to offer the same service across Waiheke Island. Richard (designer of the bins and composting expert), has recently been contracted to go to Fiji and help implement the system with a bunch of resorts over there. Fiji has a massive problem with waste management and Richard will be working closely to help solve this for them.

You can’t recycle plastic with food on it.  Only 5% of all plastics in the world get recycled effectively, while 40% end up in landfill and a third in fragile ecosystems such as the world’s oceans. Innocent products are certified commercially compostable, meaning they will break down into carbon dioxide, water, and organic matter when in a compost. The speed of breakdown depends on the temperature and blend of the compost.

We partner with waste management companies, councils and event organisers to provide our customers with zero waste solutions.
